about

Vocal powerhouse Izo FitzRoy exploded on to the scene in 2017 with her debut LP ‘Skyline’, the album incorporating a stunning fusion of styles spanning gospel, funk and soul as Izo’s raw bluesy tone and direct lyricism took centre stage.

Fast forward and she now has one of the most recognisable voices in the modern soul scene having won high profile coverage across the BBC, KCRW, FIP, CLASH, UNCUT, Blues & Soul and Indie Shuffle to name a few.

Her second album ‘How The Mighty Fall’ built further on the soul and gospel foundations of her debut. Recorded between Paris, London and Sheffield, it saw her move up a gear from new voice on the scene to magazine cover star.

The album was released In March of 2020, just as the world went into lockdown, so instead of the planned tour, a burgeoning online musical friendship began between Izo and renowned L.A. producer Erik Janson, who both shared a deep love of mid 60s and early 70s soul and rock records. They began to write a series of songs to describe their experiences from the year, but with a sound harkening back to records like Dusty Springfield’s Dusty In Memphis and Bill Withers Just As I Am.

The result was a trio of songs that will be released as standalone singles in the second half of 2021 ahead of Izo’s third album due for 2022.

'Everybody Knows This Ain't Right' was the first of the three and covered the social injustice that was a focal point of the year. Now Little Birdie describes Izo’s joy of freedom after being trapped. “We lived for a while in a world where wildlife seemed to blossom when we were all stuck at home and you could hear the birdsong so loudly without any traffic or aeroplanes overhead and that was really inspiring for this song”. Izo and Erik leaned into “Little Birdie” and the two other songs as a therapeutic outlet to hold on to the belief that we’d come out on the other side with overwhelming relief and excitement.
